Music Venues in Bath

Music Venues in Bath

It has to be said that Bath doesn’t really have the venues to pull in the big-name bands and artists and Bristol undeniably fulfils this function in the south-west. What Bath does have to offer, however, is a whole host of smaller music venues and pubs which support a vibrant local music scene rooted in the choral and folk tradition. Here at Singing Lesson Bath, we love it when our singing students take to the stage for the first time, so here’s a list of places we really like to go and see live music.

Bath Abbey is right at the hub of Bath’s choral and classical music scene. It has three choirs (boys, girls and men) which are selected from schools around Bath, as well as the two universities, to whom they offer generous choral scholarships. As such, it plays a vital role in the community, bringing together strands of Bath’s population that might otherwise have never met. It also offers a summer music school, tours with its own choirs and guest slots for travelling choirs that might want to perform in its beautiful setting. All in all, Bath Abbey is a massive asset to the city, providing a symbol of unity through choral music.

Komedia is primarily a comedy club, but also offers an array of musical evenings and events. Located at 22 - 23 Westgate Street, BA1 1EP, it holds regular open mic nights and we would encourage any of our singing students to have a go if they are feeling confident enough. The atmosphere is really chilled and the staff are friendly, so there’s no better place to start. Their ‘acoustic showcase’ nights are also one to look out for. Komedia puts on showcase of local talent; not only is this a great chance to see who else is making music in Bath, it's a great networking event should you be looking to sing in an ensemble.

The Bell Inn prides itself on ‘live music and real ale’, what could be better? Interestingly enough, it is a cooperative, run for the benefit of the community rather than one owner; this ensures that prices are kept reasonable and the vibe is really communal. There tend to be live music here about three times a week and the event range from open mics, and vinyl DJ-ing. Many have good things to say about the Bell: Robert Plant (of Led Zepplin) gave it his seal of approval, describing it as a ‘crucial and integral venue and a great window into the world of music’ and it also features on the Observer’s and Time’s ‘Good Pubs’ list. Well, if it’s good enough for them, it certainly does it for me. Head down to 103 Walcott Street, BA1 5BW to check it out for yourself! Below is Moscow Drug Club's brilliant live set at The Bell in 2011!

Graham was willing to take me on with no ability at all but has now got me singing and enabled me to join a choir. It's a miracle!
